The McCLENDON and McLENDON
Genealogy Discussion Web (a.k.a., electronic bulletin board) is now ready.
If you have had problems registering in the
past, you should not have anymore. Please, try again. It would be
easier for most people to use the above McClendon/McLENDON (only)
electronic bulletin board at GenConnect, instead of this one.

Trouble remembering your user names and
passwords?
If you use Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4 or 5, you can
automatically save you user name and password, Netscape doesn't have this
feature (that I know of). Additionally, it is a good idea to save your user
names and passwords on 3 x 5 cards in an index card file or on a spiral version
of the cards in case your computer crashes, etc. Here are two neat programs, the
first one keep passwords, while the second program has a few more features:
PassKeeper for Windows by Brad Greenlee (Free)
Password Keeper for Windows by Gregory Braun (Free to try, $20
if you decide to keep it.) |

Remember that you can use your web browser to
search the contents of any web page for specific words or names
by clicking on "Edit" in the menu bar (in most web browsers), then
"Find" (in most web browsers) and typing in the word or name, then
clicking on "OK" or something equivalent to that word. Happy hunting!

Subject: "Earliest Known McClendon Ancestor"
Pat and Melba:
Our earliest proven McClendon ancestor is Joseph Parker
McClendon b. 1857 in Washington Parish, LA. He was married at least two times
that I know of: Julia Lott (our ancestor) and Laura Perry (who also had
McClendon children).
Although I strongly suspect Joseph "Joe" McClendon
was the son of William and Mary McClendon (referring to 1860 Census of
Washington Parish, LA) there is conflicting evidence (i.e. the death
certificate that Artena Faye McClendon obtained that shows his father as Frank
McClendon). I've been
trying to iron this out for sometime but haven't been successful.
I
lean toward the census record as being correct because of the
following matches to what we know about Joe: his birth date, his older
brother named John, an older sister and the location of Washington Parish. I
can't explain the death certificate other than the fact that the information
provider didn't know the full name of Joe's father or didn't have accurate
information. Family tradition says Joe's father died about 1863. This would
support my inaccurate information theory.
I located John (right age
for Joe's brother) in the 1870 Washington Parish LA Census living as a farm laborer in the household of Levi Self. This would
support the early demise
(or absence) of their father. However, I haven't been able to locate Mary
(William's widow) and Joe and his sister in the 1870 Census.
In 1880
I located Joseph in the household of Mary Stateham (not sure of spelling) in
Washington Parish LA. She is listed as a widow, Joseph as her son, age 22.
There are Stateham children (Daniel W. age 16 and Angelina C. age 14) in the
household as well a daughter named Ellen age 19 who appears to have the
McClendon name. If this is actual our Joe, then Ellen would make
sense because were were always told Joe had a brother and two sisters but his
father died while they were young.
If Mary Stateham is the same as
Mary McClendon, then that means she would have started her Stateham family by
1864 or 1865 (referring to Daniel's age). The census writing is difficult to
read so I'm not sure of the spelling of the last name but Mary and the other
names are very clear. I've looked for the name in the 1870 Census of
Washington Parish but haven't found it under that spelling.
This is
one scenario of what could have happened: William died during the civil war
and Mary remarried. Then by 1880 her second husband was dead. Who ever gave
the death certificate info could have gotten Joe's father's name confused
with his stepfather or with an uncle or grandfather. If Joe lost his father
at a young age who was replaced by a stepfather, he might not have known much
about his McClendon father.
Joe and Julia (Lott) McClendon's first child
was born in 1883. Although I haven't located their marriage date (courthouse
fire), It most likely was between the 1880 census and the birth of their
first child, possibly 1881 or 1882.
I hope you can make sense out of
this. I have only researched the William McClendon angle of the story so if
anyone else has other info, please let me know. Any help is
appreciated.
Best Regards, Donna

James, Artena and David McClendon
John Edward McCLENDON (March 9, 1891 -
July 9, 1950) first married
Artena COOPER (September 5, 1896 - August 3, 1924). John Edward McCLENDON
is buried in Oak Hill Baptist Cemetery in Poplarville, MS. He died of cancer. Artena
COOPER died as a result of a radiator exploding in the car she was driving as she jumped
with an infant from the moving car. The 7 week old infant, Wilford O'Neil, survived. They
had four children: James Levert, Ernest Leroy, Ruthalee
(a.k.a. "Ruth"), and Wilford O'Neal.
This is an expansion of Artena COOPER's branch: James Levert was born
on September 6th 19??. When his father died in 1950 he was listed in the obituary as
living in NYC (New York City, NY). Ernest Leroy was born on October 26th
19?? and lived in Synder, Texas in 1950. Ruthalee was born on May 13th,
19?? and married a BROWN. They lived in Japan in 1950 and should be in California now. Wilford
O'Neal was born June 15, 1924 and died in the fall (October or November) 1993.
Willford O'Neil had a least one daughter Artena F. McCLENDON, P.O. Box 398 , Rio Linda,
CA, 95673. Artena's e-mail address is: Artena@mindspring.com.
