If you want to search the Discussion Web, you must register first.

Please contact me (Pat@PatMcClendon.com) if you have any problems registering or posting messages. In order to use this Discussion Web, your browser must be able to view frames.

Trouble remembering your user names and passwords?

If you use Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4 or 5, you can automatically save you user name and password, Netscape doesn't have this feature (that I know of). Additionally, it is a good idea to save your user names and passwords on 3 x 5 cards in an index card file or on a spiral version of the cards in case your computer crashes, etc. Here are two neat programs, the first one keep passwords, while the second program has a few more features:

PassKeeper for Windows by Brad Greenlee (Free)

Password Keeper for Windows by Gregory Braun (Free to try, $20 if you decide to keep it.)

If possible, please post messages to the McCLENDONs and McLENDONs Genealogy Discussion Web after registering, but if that doesn't work for you, to post a message in the e-mail section of the Genealogy: McCLENDONs and McLENDONs on the Internet, send your e-mail to me at E-mail@PatMcClendon.com. Use this word: "Genealogy" in the subject field. Please be patience about your listing as I stay behind in posting them. If you want an instant posting use the McCLENDONs and McLENDONs Genealogy Discussion Web.

Remember that you can use your web browser to search the contents of any web page for specific words or names by clicking on "Edit" in the menu bar (in most web browsers), then "Find" (in most web browsers) and typing in the word or name, then clicking on "OK" or something equivalent to that word. Patricia,

Thank you for the information on your (I assume) web page. My mother's maiden name is McClendon (in case you were wondering how a guy with the name Griffin fit in). She and I have done some research into our part of the McClendon clan, back to the early 1600's when our family first came to America in Georgia. I don't know if it is true, but supposedly all McClendons in America are descended from the 2 or 3 brothers (I can't remember which and don't have the info in front of me) that came to America at that time. Here are some URL's you might be interested in:

I've saved your URL and e-mail address. If I come across anything more, or if you are interested in the research we have done, I'll get back to you.

Thanks again

Pat, this is just to let you know so that you can pass it on at your convenience. I have probably troubled you long enough with corrections so I will not be upset at all if you do not post this. While researching courthouse records Monday, I contacted my mother and advised her that I was still having trouble locating any thing on her grandfather, Lee (Lem) McClendon. Mom advised me that he died when she was about one years old. She was born in 1930. I began to look in 1931 death records and to my surprise, discovered that Lee (Lem) spelled his name different from that of his children.why I was (with only one "c") This explains having difficulty in the past. However, his uncle Aaron did spell his name with two "c"'s. I also discovered that my great-grandfather had a brother who lived in Kemp, Texas (about ten miles west of Mabank) his name was Lee's death certificate. G.W. died four G.W. Mclendon. G.W. signed years later. Both Lee and G.W. death records listed a father named Dan and a mother named Margerett (Walker) McLhat Danlendon. The headache is and Margerett birthplace was not Tenn. or Miss. but Alabama. No other information was given on the death records but that. At least now I have a point of reference that is a slight more reliable than oral references that I have been receiving. I am also in the process of researching records from Cherokee county, Cuney, Texas on Lee's uncle Aaron McClendon. I do have official documentation via Family Tree archives that he married in 1882 and resided there. I suppose that well meaning relatives that I have talked to recently, had their names, dates, and places slightly confused in their minds. As I contact them, many are just as surprised at the new info as I was. Again, thank you for you past assistance. Post at your discretion and convenience.

I thought you might be interested in knowing that there is a book called Corkerns Have Many Cousins. I do not have a copy of the book but my father, "Corky" Corkern does. It is a book that contains the entire line of Corkerns (well...most of them). I will ask my Dad to look for McClendons in the book and see if he comes up with any hits.

Hi! I'm hoping you or your contacts can help me. I have been searching (for several years) for the parents of James T. McClendon born 16 Mar 1861, died 3 Mar 1918. He was married to Margaret M Chandler 14 July 1878. Margaret was born 1 April 1848 died 2 July 1914. I know James T.'s mother was named Elizabeth. In 1870 he is listed on the census for Springville, St. Clair Co., AL as living with his mother Elizabeth and stepfather James Crain. Margaret and James T. had three children:

Pat, it's eerie. I thought I was looking at my cousin Margaret's (McClendon) picture when I saw your pic. There may be a connection. My grannie was Allie Clarke McClendon; my mom was Mary Lois McClendon; one of her brothers lived in San Francisco and had (2?) children, one of whom drowned, I believe. My sister Madge is the genealogy expert; I didn't pay proper attention growing up. I believe that a couple of generations of McClendons were in Hot Springs, Arkansas and that one of the men was a doctor. I've run out of time, but I need to contact Rob Hawkes, who sent you e-mail, searching for Arkansas McClendons. I don't need a response. My sister has just got to get e-mail so she can correspond with 'yall'. I book-marked your web page and will explore after work again - soon. Carolyn Hearne Baker.

I've been working on the McClendon name for a few months now & believe I've stumbled onto some new data. At least it's new to me. Someone let me know if I'm about to duplicate someone else's work. I know that some of my McClendon ancestors lived in Anson Co. NC in the 1700-1800's. Anson Co. was formed in 1750 from Bladen Co & extended to the Mississippi River. We're talking about a lot of territory here now!

However, while at the Anson Co NC lib. I found some research papers written in the 1920's-1930's on the McClendon/McLendon name. There are 150-200 pages of it. It looks like research towards a book. Lots of hand written notes & letters & most of it seems to be typed afterwards.

To start it deals with 2 brothers coming to America from Scotland. Isaac born in 1754 in Scotland & dying in Wilks Co Ca in 1819. It tells of him living in NC. The other brother is Jacob McClendon Sr. born 1725 & arriving in Georgia on 10-10-1774 . He died in Wilks Co Ga 1791-93 7 served in the Rev War in Ga under General Clark.

These papers go on to there descendants. Rev War vets ect. Looks like some really good stuff.

I've only copied 20 some odd pages so far but, here are the names of some of the researchers & there correspondents:

Mrs. Ingrams, Englewood Colorado
Jeannette Godby (Mrs H.A), College Park, Ga.
Mrs Lily Doyle Dunlap of Andersonville NC
Mrs S.E. McClendon, Thomasvile , Ga.
Carol Bilkeimer (Mrs J.A.)

Does anyone know of these works or these people? I'll be glad to share all this with anyone when I'm finished compiling it.

Hello,

I am a McClendon descendant and am looking for information on McClendon genealogy.

I am African-American, my father is mixed and his parents are of different races. His mother is Native-American and his father is Scottish. I have just recently found out that his father, my paternal grandfather is not really a McClendon. The story is that he (my grandfather) was a runaway/abandoned child and was taken in by the McClendon family (I estimate that the couple that took him in would have been born between 1890 and 1910).

I am attempting to trace the McClendon family and my grandfather's family as far back as possible. The problem, though, is that I don't know my grandfather's real last name. So my question is does anybody have or know of any McClendon descendants from the Pennsylvania area born around the turn of the century that would have adopted/taken in a runaway Scottish child? If so, the information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hello,

I finally got tired of the few pieces of info I had all over the place, and decided to combine as many pieces as I can in one master list of MacLennan, McLendon, McClendons. Let me know if you see any discrepancies. I know that I have one duplicate family below, it seems to center around Daniel Boone (Pop B) McClendon. I combined them in Family Tree Maker which seems unable to see that I have this duplicates.

After doing all of this, I still haven't come up with the parents of Needham McLendon born in South Carolina, who migrated to Clay Co. & Early Co., Georgia. There is no mention of Ephraim McLendon either. Jackie Baldwin Rucker said that she suspected that either Ephraim McLendon or William McLendon was Needham's father.

Please feel free to give me corrections.

File: SIRJOHN2.TXT (119448 bytes) I didn't receive it, at least I don't think so ... of course my brain has turned to mush formatting this whole page in one sitting.

I finally connected Joel Tyson McClendon's descendents to the main body through Joel Jesse McClendon.

Do you know where I should connect Burrell McClendon?? Are the names Burwell McClendon and Burrell McClendon the same?

I know that I have alternated between the spelling of McLendon and McClendon. I think that I will settle on this hyphenated version McLendon-McClendon in the final product. Since this printing I have added more names. However, I have not uploaded it to my major computer yet.

I did all this in order to research McLendon-McClendon migrational patterns. I am still looking for the parents of NEEDHAM MCLENDON (abt 1800 NC) who migrated from NC probably Darlington County to Ft. Gaines, Clay County, Georgia.

Let me know how this attachment comes through from msn.com.

Could you send me your phone numbers and snail mail addresses? Mine is:

Hi: My name is Maxine Hetzel. I am not new to genealogy but I am new to e mail correspondence. I happened on your information and saw mention of Shadrack and Jesse McClendon of Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. Shadrack was my g g g grandfather. His son, Lewis, was my g g grandfather. Jesse was living with Lewis at the time of his death. I have a copy of the succession which is recorded in Harrisonburg, Louisiana. Lewis was the administrator of the succession and most of their holdings were a joint ownership. He left no heirs and his estate was to be divided 5 ways - Lewis, his only brother, 3 living sisters and to the children of one sister who was dead. I have visited with McClendons who are still living in the area. Maxine

My direct line is Shadrack McClendon, Lewis McClendon, Bethany McClendon Adams, Minerva Adams French, Lois French Brown and me, Maxine Brown Hetzel.

I am James R McClendon III and I have written before. Well I finally got around to searching census records and found out that I was looking for the wrong names. Here is what I have found so far:

James R McClendon (my grandfather) b (dated removed to prevent Identity Theft) to James Edward McClendon and Janie Everett
Other children are:
Geneveive, James Harold McClendon, Gene McClendon Bass, Lena May McClendon Debaux

James E McClendon b app 1883 to James P McClendon and Susan R.
Other children are:
Aubry McClendon and Lon McClendon

James P McClendon b app 1853 to James A McClendon b app 1830 and Sarah
Other children of James A are:
Dick R. McClendon, Estella McClendon, Robert McClendon, Matlin McClendon and Leown McClendon
I believe James A McClendon was from Alabama and moved to Harrison County Texas around 1852

I feel that until I can find where they moved from in Alabama, I may be stuck for awhile. I just wanted to update you and make corrections.

Sincerely,
Jamie McClendon, P.O. Box 357, Cashmere, WA 98815, 509-782-4334

Hi, Gang,
I have radically changed the website. It is no longer, one long page but indexed & linked main page to all the other pages. Each family has a sub-page (for example: McClendon) and some of the sub-pages link to other pages with detailed information.

Hi Pat,
I saw the notice that you had updated the McClendon genealogy. I am a descendant of Thomas McClendon Sr., Thomas McClendon Jr., and Sophia Penelope McClendon whom married Joseph Jesse Lasseter. Thomas McClendon Sr. was b Apr 1730 in Edinburgh, Scotland (came to America with brothers Isaac & Jacob) & d in Henry Co. GA. Thomas Jr. bc 1758-60 d 1 Jan 1831 in Henry Co, GA also. -- snip --

I haven't worked on this line for many years and am interested to know if we are from the same McClendons.

I'll look forward to hearing from you.

Hello Artena,
I'm sending a copy of this e-mail to my distant cousin Dan LOTT to share with another distant cousin, Donna McCLENDON McGuyer. Note: 12-29-97
- Her new an e-mail address is: usermacks@aol.com). And, I'll also post this on the genealogy web site ASAP.

Well, we didn't know Wilford's middle name was O'Neal. Is Ruthalee name spelled correctly or could it have been Ruth Lee? Could you tell me the dates for your father, John Edward McClendon, as we have them to be: June 15, 1924 and died in the fall (October or November) 1993.

Also the dates we have for Artena Cooper are: September 5, 1896 - August 3, 1924 but if I recall correctly her tombstone was very hard to read as it as badly deteriorated.

(2) George William McLendon b: 1871 in Ramer, AL d:25 Apr 1912 in DC;
(3) Jonathan DeKalb McLendon b: 11 Aug 1830 Pike, AL d: 14 Feb 1898 in Henderson, Al;
(4) the Rev. George Granberry McLendon b: 14 Dec 1807 in Morgan, GA, d: 15 Sep 1895 in Ainsley, AL;
(5) Josiah McLendon b: 1764/1766 NC, d: about 1835 place unk;
(6) Dennis McLendon b: 1735/1740 NC, d: unk;
(7) John McLendon b: unk, d: unk;
(8) Thomas McLendon b: unk, d: unk.

I am a member of the Clan MacLennan Association, and I understand there is some controversy whether or not the McLendon's are of this Clan. My brothers and I believe we are from what little our father related to us about his family. It is really fragmented. It has taken me several years to locate any information about my paternal grandfather.

In any case, I just wanted to introduce myself and perhaps to be able to correspond to some other of the McLendon clan.

Thank you for listening.

Hello all, Just wanted to share the following info. The research firm I used has a wonderful turn around response to request. It is also economical. The 1880 federal census of Cherokee county Tx listed my ancestors as McClelons. It was obviously a Typo by the transcribers. The 1870 census of the County listed them as McClendons. Hope this helps both me and you. James

Mr. Smith,
Please send me your street address so I can mail you photocopies of the record you requested.

It was indeed McClendon. We made three pages of copies. The first was just to get all the vital information from the top of the page. Your family was further down, spilling onto the next page.

Daniel McClendon was a 28-yr. old farmer from Alabama. His wife Margaret was 27, also from Alabama. The children, all born in Texas, were: Aaron (10), John (6), Lemuel (5), Cyntha (13) -- in that order. They were in Beat No. 4 of Cherokee County, Texas.

Please send payment of $20.00 to the address below, and we hope you have more requests for us.

Dear Saundra,
Here is some updated info for your search.

Needham was my great, great, great, great grandfather. The information we have is that he was born in about 1795 in the Darlington District of SOUTH Carolina, not North Carolina. His first wife was Margaret Dill, also born in Darlington District South Carolina. Their first son was born on August 6, 1819, also in Darlington District South Carolina.

Needham was recorded in the 1830 census in Laurens County, Georgia and in the 1840 census in Early County, Georgia. We have a notation that Needham's father may have been named William.

FYI, our family tree info is through Needham and Margaret Dill McLendon and their second son William. Then William and Sarah Gray McLendon's first son (3rd child) James William. Then James William and Tracy Ann Evans McLendon's son Malcom Wesley. Then Malcom and Gertrude Oliver McLendon's son Joseph Edwin. Then Joseph Edwin and Bronnie Bee Belcher McLendon's son John Wesley. Then I was born to John and Barbara Jean Hollis McLendon.

Thanks. Please let us know what you find about Needham's parents. Also, where do you fit in to this family tree?

I have 2 books that detail the early immigrants. The McLeondons of America by Melba Goff Allen and The McLeondons of Carol County Georgia by Lois C.McLendon. Plus I have a stack here about 3" hi of family sheets and notes taken by early family researchers. My records show the three immigrant sons of John were John, William and Dennis. My line is with Brient, son of Dennis. Brient was the father of Ephriam, b.1782. He and his wife Elizabeth Tomberlinson (?) had 11 children. Needham Sr was son of Ephriam, and he married Polly Sears. Much information on this line is included in Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia by Folks Huxford. There are many personal tidbits included in the records, viz, Mariah, son of Needham, had six children but was never married, the children were by John Smith, husband of her sister Elizabeth. John and Elizabeth buried in different places. I also have names and addresses of family members who have done much research. Will share if anyone is interested in what I have.

Dear Pat,
I am a McLendon originally from Louisville now living in Northern Virginia. I am the youngest of two children of Jack and Norma McLendon. Norma died in June ‘93 and Jack is still alive and living in Louisville and Evansville. My older sister is living in St. Paul where she is finishing her Ph.D in Mass Communications.

I married in ‘73 to Robert Dragone. We have lived mostly in Asia because my husband is a Foreign Service Officer. We have two daughters, Jessica age 21 who is a Senior at William and Mary and Alexis age 18 who just started her Freshman year at James Madison University. Both daughters are adopted from South Korea. My husband is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) and now on assignment in Denmark. I am a student at George Mason University pursuing a BS in Psychology.

I am interested in finding more information about the McLendon Family to pass on to my children and father. I would like to know more about the origins of the family before the arrival in to North America. If you have any information that you think would be helpful please contact me at my e-mail address.

I will be happy to share any information that we have about the family. I will ask my father to give me all the names and dates from his family and will pass them on.

Thank you for your web site. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello, Pat,
What a great site! Congratulations.

Have just recently discovered my McClendon/McLendon heritage. Have been searching for the marriage bond (or record) of Malachi Reeves Owen, b.1814, Wilkes Co., GA, s/o Obadiah, s/o Uriah, s/o William Owen, Sr. Through census records, I had established that Malachi Reeves Owen and his wife, Eliza, (thought possibly to be McClendon) lived in Heard Co., GA, 1840 & 1850, in Leake Co., MS in 1860, in Scott Co., MS in 1870 where she survived him and appears as a widow living with her son in !880 but does not appear in 1900. Through absolute good fortune, just this week in Carrolton, GA we spotted a copy of "The McLendon's of Carroll County, GA and other Related Families" by Lois Clouse McLendon. In Chapter 21 she refers to the will of Of Benaiah McLendon, dated September 15, 1852, and probated March 23, 1853 in Heard Co., GA. In this will he names sons:

Bennet Asbury, Russell, William S., and daughters: Lucinda, Almira J., Mary, Adaline L., Julia A. and ELIZA WHO MARRIED MALACHI OWEN!! Lois C. McL. relates that Benaiah is the son of Samuel, grandson of Jacob McLendon, Sr. of Wilkes Co., GA.

Do you have any other information of this line? I would love to exchange other data and to know more about my ggg-grandmother and her family.

Irvin Lee McClendon, Sr.Dear Pat,
I believe that there is a very great probability that we are indeed related. My full name is Irvin Lee McClendon, Sr. (I have a son, Irvin Lee Jr.). My late father was Irvin Nicholas McClendon, Jr. He was the son of Irvin Nicholas McClendon, Sr. and Myra Marie (Ferrill) McClendon.

My paternal grandmother, whom we all called "Big Mama," was living in Bogalusa, LA when she died in 1953. I remember the year because I was living in Biloxi, MS at the time, and had just started the 3rd grade. Both my paternal grandfather and grandmother are buried at Amite, LA. My grandfather died before I was born, so I have no personal recollection of him.

I was born in Waco, TX in 1945; my father (Irvin Nicholas Jr.) was born in Fannin, MS in 1917, but he moved with his parents to Bogalusa when he was about two years old; my grandfather (Irvin Nicholas Sr.) was born in Mississippi in 1883. My great grandfather was Newton Asbury McClendon, born in Georgia in 1853; 2 x great grandfather was William S.L. McClendon, born in Georgia in 1827; 3 x great grandfather was Benniah McClendon, born in Georgia in 1781; 4 x great grandfather was Samuel McClendon, Sr., born in colonial North Carolina in 1756; and 5 x great grandfather was Jacob McClendon, Sr., also born in colonial North Carolina in 1725.

(Jacob McClendon, Sr. and his son, Samuel McClendon, Sr., were both Revolutionary War patriots and are documented as such by the D.A.R. I have just completed acquiring all of the documentation I need to join S.A.R. by virtue of my direct descent from them.)

Jacob McClendon, Sr. was the son of Thomas Macklendon, Sr.; Thomas was the son of Dennis Macklendon (Dennis the Emigrant); and Dennis was the son of John MacLennan of Scotland. Dennis settled in what is now Perquimans County, North Carolina, and I believe that many if not most of the McClendons/McLendons from the southern states are descended from him.

A black female cousin, Saundra Brown in Chicago, has also done extensive compilation of genealogical data on the family. Do you have her Internet address?

Please, let's keep in touch and see how we can help each other fill in any missing data. Here is a letter from Joe Cosner sent on December 17, 1997:

Pat McClendon
2825 Tyson Place
Louisville, KY

I saw your name in the Clan MacLennan Newsletter. A friend who has a computer was able to obtain your mailing address.

I am seeking information on my great grandmother and her family. Her name was Jane McClendon and she was born October 18, 1844, in Dublin, Ireland. My, mother, who is 92, remembers Jane always said she was Scottish. We don't know who her parents were, but we do know the following: Jane McClendon married Jacob Madison Humble on September 8, 1865 in Angelina County, Texas. (Lufkin, Texas is the county seat.) Jacob was in the Civil War so I guess they were married when he returned. They lived in Silbsee, Texas and are both buried in the Knupple Cemetery in Silsbee. Jacob and Jane had five children. In the 1880 census it shows a Jacob C. Humble living with Jacob and Jane. (Jacob C. was 73 at the time and born about 1807 in North Carolina. His wife's maiden name was Francis Knighton. (I assume this was Jane's father-in-law and mother-in-law.)

As far as we know, Jane's life started in Angelina County, Texas in 1865. My mother seems to think Jane was an orphan, but she doesn't when she lost her parents.

There seems to be a lot of McClendons. I would appreciate any information that would lead me to Jane's past.

Thank you.

Pat, I just finished reading some of your email on the Mcclendons and your statement "Don't email me". and here I am emailing you. I desperately need help so please don't junk this. I have traced my McClinton Family back to Abbieville, so. C. where John McClinton was born ca. 1780. His son Harvey went to Ark. along with his father. Harvey was b. 1819. I find John in early church records of the Cedar Springs Reformed Presbyterian Church. My question is about the spelling of the name. Is this the same family as McClendon? I cannot find John's father and think I have to know how the name was spelled originally before I can go back any farther. If you ever find time and if you have the information, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. And Merry Christmas! Carol. CEDwinnell@aol.com.

Hi Pat,
I did a net search on McClendon's and your site came up. I read about you and what caught my eye was the fact that both your parents are from Bogalusa. My grandfather, Mark Kearney McClendon, was also from Bogalusa, who passed away a few years ago now. His first wife was Grace McNabb, who passed away when I was a child of maybe 5 - 8 years old.

I believe. M.K. McClendon had 3 children with his first wife: Beverly Ann, Laverne Louise, and Corky (not sure it that is a nickname or not). My mother (Lavern Louise McCLENDON Chedville) is the only surviving child of Mac (nickname) McClendon.

My Aunt Beverly was a school teacher at the time of her passing some 16 - 17 years ago.

My Uncle Corkey McClendon was a resident of Bogalusa all his life, I think, as was my Grandfather Mark Kearney. He retired from the phone company years ago (South Central Bell) and lived in Bogalusa ever since and until he passed away, a couple years after my step-grandmother, Josie Mae. (He remarried to Josie Mae Adams who is also from Bogalusa.)

I would like to know if you're of any relation and my mother would enjoy hearing any news of her relations also.

My grandfather has a brother who is still living in New Orleans. I know when I met him at the wake, his daughter and him, he has to speak with a device he holds to his neck. I believe he had cancer at one time and that was the cause of an operation he had to have.

Hope to hear from you Pat.

Dear Pat,

A "Merry Christmas" to you!!! Thank you for this wonderful web page you sent me. I don’t remember or see in my file where we talked before? But whether we did or not doesn’t matter.

I have been trying for years to find the parents of my Great Great Grandmother, Mary McLendon-McClendon b-ca 1820 m-27 Sept.,1837 in Butts Co., Ga. John Hale b-1802. They lived in Henry Co., Ga. 1840-1860 and Clayton Co., Ga. 1870. I have not found them in 1880 or later and don’t know where or when they died.

I have descendants of about half their children and nothing on the others as they were still a home when we lost track of them. I believe Mary to be the daughter of Ethelred and Rebecca Wooten McClendon. John and Mary Hale named their first child, a daughter, Rebecca. Many members of this family went to Troup Co., Ga. and there is some that believe that John Hale went to Alabama. Chambers Co. Alabama keeps coming up! But I have not found and proof they went there. Some of the McClendons did go there and it would make sense as family’s traveled together. Well, off the see what the Grand Babbies got for Christmas!!

Hope we can talk soon!!

Dear Pat,

I just spoke with my mother on the telephone in Yorba Linda, California. Her name is Evelyn Lucile (Maycumber) McClendon and she was born in 1921 at Fairview, Oklahoma. She told me that Big Mama (my father's mother) was living in a house on Eighth Street in Bogalusa when she died in 1953, but doesn't remember if it was on East Eighth or West Eighth. I also asked her if Big Mama had been married twice; she said she didn't think so.

My father Irvin Nicholas McClendon, Jr. died in 1990; he was born in 1917 at Fannin, Rankin County, Mississippi. He was the second of three children. His parents were Irvin Nicholas McClendon, Sr. and Myra Marie (Ferrill) McClendon, though I seem to recall that they also had a baby boy who died in infancy. My late father's older sister is Flora Mae; she married Carlos A. Efferson and they now live in Alamo, California and have no children. His younger sister is Gladys Irene; she lives in southern California somewhere and has one daughter named Ursula Jane. Ursula has three sons (not by her current husband): Brett Mitchell, Blair Nathan, and Clark David (all surnamed Smith). My cousin Clark David was reared by my parents almost as another son, and he is now a detective in the police department for the city of Orange, California. Blair is a U.S. Navy officer, and I'm not sure what Brett does nor where he lives.

It sounds to me like your "Big Mama" and mine are two different persons, so I'm inclined to think that it is probably a term of endearment, much as my children call my mother "Nana," commonly used in the south for a matriarchal figure in a family.

Thank you for the information on creating a web page; I'm not sure when I'll have time to actually build one, but hopefully not too long. Best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year in 1998.

I am searching for information on my g-great grandparents. Landis Sumac Beasley born inn 1848 in Shelby Co., TN, the son of Henry Beasley and Mary Daugherty. Landis Sumac Beasley married Generia Frances McClendon who was born April 25, 1852 in Jackson, Hinds. Mississippi, the daughter of Francis McClendon and Rebecca Levinsky.

Does anyone have any information on Generia Frances McClendon and her parents, siblings, grandparents, etc. I would appreciate any information you could supply me.

Thank You,
Kathy Hodge West

Thomas Keitly McCLENDON

Mrs. Jean McCLENDON Gibson sent me page 8 of her family's genealogy a while back. I have now converted the diagram into a .GIF image. Click here to see it. She is the daughter of Thomas Keitly McCLENDON (1872 - 1960) and Alice Margaret Deweese (1885 - 1945). Her family moved from the Kentucky - Tennessee border (living in Adairville, Franklin, and Orlinda) to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1912. They later moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario, CANADA.

Below is the information taken from three letters from Mrs. Jean McCLENDON Gibson that I received in February, March, and December 1997:

Mrs. Jean McCLENDON Gibson sent me this diagram of her family's genealogy a while back after her nephew, Rob McCLENDON (who lives in Sioux Lookout, Ontario) sent her printouts of this web site. I have now converted the diagram into a .GIF image (JeanGibson.gif).

She is the daughter of Thomas Keitly McCLENDON (1872 - 1960) and Alice Margaret Deweese (1885 - 1945). Jean was named after a cousin Eugene (which she said that she soon changed that!). Her family moved from the Kentucky - Tennessee border (living in Adairville, Franklin, and Orlinda) to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1912. "The big lure was the 160 acres of fertile, treeless farming land at the mere cost of three years of habitation, a building (prairie shack or sod house usually) and a few acres of cultivation."  They later moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario, CANADA.

She says that some of the names in their lineage are: Townsend, Bowling, Starks, MacDonald, Griffith, and some many more that she can't remember them all as she is approaching her 89th birthday.

Jean McCLENDON Gibson's grandfather was Bowling McCLENDON and her grandmother was Anne TOWNSEND McClendon. She said that there were several marriages between the McCLENDONs and TOWNSENDs. Jean said that if I were to go up to Thunder Bay that I could locate some of her family: Scott, Jamie, Michelle and that Michelle is a senior partner of G.B.W. and Architects which would be easy to locate.

She said that there is a street in Franklin, Kentucky named McClendon in which she implied was named after a Judge McCLENDON.

She also mentioned that she was looking for a McCLENDON tartan: "there was a description of the LOGAN (McCLENDON) tartan in a small book on Scotch tartans which was sold at Cole's book stores."

Jean enclosed an excerpt of an undated letter from Dr. Jesse F. McCLENDON (a retired Cornell University Professor) which was written many years ago ... maybe about 1977:

Excerpts from letter received from Dr. Jesse McClendon - Morristown, Penn.

… the McClendons and McLendons are the same family... They are a splinter group of the Logan Clan, went into battle and had same tartans. The way the name split off is tradition, and there were no court houses or Bibles to record names. Tradition says a Logan chief was killed in battle, when his wife was pregnant. The son was born but mistreated as he had no father to protect him, so he was rescued by the monks of the Priory of Beauly who educated him to be a priest, and he built churches on the Isle of Skye and adjacent mainland. In those days priests could marry. Some of his descendants migrated to McClendon Creek, North Carolina. During the Revolution, there was local civil war in North Carolina and three brothers rode horseback to Georgia and joined a Georgia regimen. As Georgia had no money to pay troops, they were paid in land-grants. The three married and had a total of sixty children. Their progeny were too numerous to tabulate … They were so numerous that one McLendon changed his name to McClendon.

I will be 93 in December and am nearly blind.

Sincerely,

J. F. McClendon

--- end of Excerpts ---

Mrs. Jean McCLENDON Gibson notes state that Dr. Jesse F. McClendon told her that the McCLENDON were a branch of the LOGAN clan. "Over 200 years ago a McCLENDON Scottish chieftain was killed in a battle and that his wife and son were left at the mercy of the victorious clan - a very unpleasant life for a little boy." The boy was educated and raised by some monks and that he later established a monastery himself. Monks could marry back then, apparently. "Some of his heirs finally came to South Carolina. Later they disagreed among themselves, even to the spelling of their name! Following this feud, one family moved to Kentucky and took up land."

Mrs. Gibson said that Dr. Jesse F. McCLENDON "said that his son had compiled a history which is on microfilm at Ann Arbor University, Michigan."

Mrs. Gibson said that "another correspondent was a McCLENDON descendent whose name was Brashear (I'm not sure now if that was her maiden name or her married name). At the time I wrote to her she was just leaving for Scotland with her husband who was playing in a golf tournament there. Mrs. ____ went to Beauly Scotland, and tried to purchase a Logan tartan but was told it was only worn at clan festivities. She also said that her brother (Leon?) had a McCLENDON history in his attic in South Carolina!"

Mrs. Gibson (born in 1908) gave all the material that she has gathered over the years to her younger brother, Archie (born in 1916), whom in turn gave it to his daughter, Judy.

Mrs. Gibson also enclosed a letter dated October 16, 1997 from Carolyn Page which I have paraphrased in parts. I spoke to Carolyn Page and she okayed the listing of her contact information here because she is not online:

Carolyn Page was inquiring which one of Olivier McCLENDON's brothers was Jean's grandfather. Jean wrote Bowling in red ink on the letter. Carolyn stated that she has gotten a lot of information from her Aunt Edna and Logan County.
