Cemetery: Roberts Cemetery, Provencal, Natchitoches Parish, LA
Inventoried and prepared for submission to the LaGenWeb project by Jaqueline
Liles and Gracie Longlois LaCaze, April 1998.
ROBERTS CEMETERY
The Roberts Cemetery is located south of Provencal, LA on the Harmony Road,
approximately one and one-half miles past the Harmony Church and Cemetery. It
is situated on a hill, with the older burials located in the upper corner from
the entrance gate, in the wooded area. The Cemetery is fenced, mowed, and
well-maintained. The earliest marked burial is that of Mary Warren Bates, wife
of A.T. Bates (1841 / 1890). There are nine other graves circa 1890/1897.
Local folklorists say that Mary Roberts, young daughter of Silas Roberts, was
the first person to be interred in the Roberts Cemetery, being buried near her
home. It is believed that Silas Roberts is also buried in this cemetery;
however neither of the graves are marked. It is also believed that Sallie
Smith Davis, the young married daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Seaborn Smith is
buried here as well, but no marker has been located.
Directions: Travel south of Provencal, LA one and one-half miles, turn east
onto Harmony Road at the Harmony Church sign, continue for about five miles,
and Roberts Cemetery is on the right. Places of interest on the way to the
Roberts Cemetery: the Harmony Church and its two cemeteries, Harmony Cemetery
to the right of the church and the Brister Cemetery to the left; and the
roadside graves marked Unknown Graves. Both of these sites will be within the
last two miles prior to reaching Roberts Cemetery.

WOODLAWN CEMETERY, DeRidder, Beauregard Parish, Louisiana
Listing Compiled by Evelyn E. Cole and Roberta C. Doty 1992
Annotated by La Vaughn H. "LV" Hayes
Woodlawn is in the heart of the very friendly small town of De Ridder, LA. It
belongs to the town, but has an advisory board to help keep things running
smoothly.
There are many large old trees and lots of shrubbery. There are security
lights along the driveway which circles the heart of the cemetery. Water
faucets are provided to water the grass and/or plants which individuals may
choose to plant and care for.
The Young Business Women of De Ridder have installed a meditating area in the
Baby Garden which is located in the northeast corner of Woodlawn. Not to pick
out any particular area, but Esther Terry has arranged a lovely place to sit
and relax and, as she says, visit her loved one.
This is a very large cemetery with over 1,400 tombstones with names and a
great many vandalized and/or unmarked graves. If any names were missed,
we deeply regret it and would be more than happy to make corrections and additions.
Some of the tombstones are inscribed in Spanish and/or Greek. These
tombstones we have copied the best we can.

Many from St. Helena Parish answered the call from Andrew Jackson
at the Battle of New Orleans. This was a fledgling frontier area but
they saw the need to protect their homes.
The Womack family, which was a pioneer family of St. Helena, saw
five brothers serve in this was: Abner, who was a colonel, Richard,
Robert, Abraham and Jacob Green.

Location: From LA Hwy 117, turn east at the intersection onto LA Hwy 120, then
immediately turn left (north), go one block then turn right (east), continue
about four blocks, bearing left at the Y intersection; about two blocks to the
cemetery. The older section of the cemetery is located on the right side of
the street, the newer section on the left.
Those burials marked with asterisks are located in the newer section of the
cemetery.
There are a number burials which are either unmarked or marked but with no
names or dates. The cemetery is in an area of rolling hills and is well kept;
azaleas have been planted in several of the family plots and they are in full
bloom in the spring.
Most of the biographical information for the various persons interred in this
cemetery was furnished by Miss Debbie Boswell and Mrs. Mary Williams. Many
thanks for their assistance in compiling this listing.
